Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, HKUMed, celebrates achievements of the Jockey Club Community Programme on Elderly Emergency Care


On 8 July 2023, the Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) hosted a scientific symposium and graduation ceremony for the Jockey Club Community Programme on Elderly Emergency Care (JCCPEEC) at the LKS Faculty of Medicine Building.

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, JCCPEEC aims to foster a caring and inclusive community. With the support of emergency services professionals from the Fire Services Department, JCCPEEC aims to enhance awareness and preparedness for resuscitation to assist the elderly through peer education. It has benefited over 2,000 elders through collaboration with 16 non-governmental organisations and community centres. The programme has conducted 90 training sessions, with 97% of participants demonstrating increased knowledge of stroke, heart attack and falls, and 93% showing confidence in handling emergency situations. Moreover, 98% of participants expressed a willingness to share their newly acquired knowledge with others.

 

The scientific symposium was held to disseminate and showcase the achievements of JCCPEEC and collate community resources to strengthen primary care and patient empowerment. It provided a platform for experts in the field to exchange their knowledge and experiences with regards to the latest trends and developments in public engagement for emergency care. Renowned speakers presenting at the symposium included:

The graduation ceremony acknowledged and recognised the dedication and hard work of the programme's instructors and participants, who worked diligently to promote emergency care among the elderly and empower the community to respond to emergency situations effectively. It celebrated the achievements of JCCPEEC and highlighted the significance of community engagement in emergency care.

 

The success of the JCCPEEC reflects one of the missions of the Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) to impact the wider community through the translation of research findings and knowledge exchange activities, and partner with professional groups, government, civil society organisations and the public to protect and promote health.
